you know, i tihnk about half the fun of blogging is coming up with a good title! you just want to know about the lizard now, don't you? ah ha!
you might be thinking, "nah...there isn't a lizard..she's just saying something random to get my attention" but you'd be wrong. there is a lizard among us here in the studio in nashville. he is living from time to time among the clothes on the floor in shawn and i's bedroom... we saw him for the first time yesterday and shawn tried to catch him (my husband's unknown talent is that he can catch all kinds of critters and has been doing it since he was a little over a year old..no kidding) normally i squeal, like all good females do in such situations, realizing he would catch the lizard and then thrust it into my face or something uniquely 'male' like that. but i was so relieved to find the movement i had been seeing out of the corner of my eye WASN'T a mouse that i just shrugged. i must have sighed too and scared the little blue-tailed creature because he bolted into a tiny hole between the wall and the door. then just now, i saw him again. i was lying on the bed, reading and i saw a quick movemnt underneath the dirty towels (yes, i am waiting until the very last moment to do laundry- who else hates laundry mats?!?!) i called shawn, who is reading himself at starbucks down the street and getting some necessary 'alone time'
(me, whispering) "babe, the lizard is here again" (shawn) "huh?" (me) "yeah the one with the blue tail" (shawn, obviously wishing i hadn't interrupted his reading and aloneness) "oh okay...well try not to scare it. i'll catch him when i get home, k? love you" (me, slightly disappointed the lizard episode didn't send him rushing back to the studio) "alright. bye"
i thought about trying to catch him...mostly to impress my hubby, but let's be honest: i don't touch lizards. so i just moved out to the room with the internet. so not to scare the lizard away. obviously.
shawn had this thing called a "3 year planning meeting" the other day at EMI/Sparrow Record Label. it was a four hour meeting with everyone (president of EMI, artist rep, management, marketing, artist development team, & us) to discuss..well, the next 3 years. daunting, truly daunting. i am old enough now that time does goes pretty fast, but who knows what all can happen in 3 years?!?! most of the time, i am too busy fighting with the present day, you know? still, its awesome that they do things like that and really look at the artists life and goals and mission and calling...not many labels (or any others i know of) take such time to invest in the personal, spiritual, and relational sides of their artists partners. (thank you, EMI) it was long, but the best part besides being loved and supported was the presents!!! *grin*
they gave us tickets to a sold out Ray Lamontagne show in Nashville for that evening (great date idea and ridiculously great show- check Ray out if you haven't heard of him and listen to the song "shelter") and they gave Shawn 5 or so new cds to inspire him..no one i had really heard of except for iron&wine and a new damien rice EP...anyone heard of Sufjan Stevens? cool stuff- new to us. but then came my favorite part: 3 NEW BOOKS! shawn likes to read and often does (like he is now doing, in fact) but i am a BOOKAHOLIC. and anyway, who can read 3 books at once? especially while recording a new record? c'mon.... he/we got the newest Bono biography, The Barbarian Way, & the new Brian McLaren book, entitled A Generous Orthodoxy. i will read them all in time...shawn started in on the Bono book...and i snagged the last one mentioned.
now, i know A LOT of conservative Christians don't like Brian McLaren and think he's a horrible person and a bunch of stuff like that. i personally own all of his books and loved reading them. its not the kind of stuff you recommend on a broad basis or something i would stamp with a broad approval...i wouldn't paint myself with that brush or add everything the man says to my personal creed...okay? so please don't write back to "warn" me of his "evils", making the wrong assumptions about where i land in the wide reactions to this man...just thought i would throw that out in anticipation...i don't write this blog with the intention of starting debates...
anyway, the book so far is really thought-provoking. in a nutshell that's what i love about this man's writings- not that i always agree with him even 50% of the time, but that he is honest (i think while he might be wrong at times, he is at least sincere and not acting with an agenda or 'scamming' people or something) and he makes me think! when your life is like mine, a little push into thought is appreciated!
i even like the title "a Generous Orthodoxy"...a generous way of tihnking...that appeals to me. i don't like denominations- i don't think they are evil or anything, but i have always disliked the emphasis Christians place on outlining our differences rather than focusing on the things we all agree on. i dislike it because a.) most of the time the differences are minute and both 'sides' can make 'Biblical' arguments...i have rarely seen a mind changed...and when that happens it usually serves to make a person puffed up with the pride of being 'right' and b.) it wastes valuable time and c.) it dramatically reduces the resources we have to efficiently tell the world about Jesus (if you don't like Baptists and won't work with them because of it, well...you are losing a whole huge group of people you could be co-laboring with...i used to see this all the time in college when we would want the Christian groups on campus to get together for a night of worship on campus, but the leaders would convince us not to because the other groups didn't have the same 'distinctives' we did...so we all worked separately and most of the time in competition with one another...what a crock. okay... [taking step down from personal soapbox]
brian mclaren beings the book talking about his journey through the different denominations and schools of through within the faith and discusses the varying Jesuses he met in them....interesting. i recognized at least 4 of the 7 he mentioned. i thought 'yeah i have had him presented to me too.' others i met for the first time through his revealing personal tales. he ended the first section of the book by simply saying what if none of them are the whole picture...but what if all of them have a grasp on a unique aspect of Jesus? hmm....more appealing still... its easier for me to believe that the Godhead is so expansive and eternal that each group may have seen something real than to believe that one is more right and the others are more wrong..you know?
anyway...that's where the thoughts are swirling today...thanks for jumping into the ever-moving-pool of thoughts inside me. would love to hear yours...
and also i want to quickly say that God does answer prayer...i have seen it in very personal ways in the last 48 hours...ways i can't share, but you know i am notihng if not honest, so you cna believe its true even without the detailed story...Praise God! who is never slow in coming to the aid of his children..
have a blessed day!

Keep us updated on your new pet lizard.
Kate,
I would have to agree with you on not agreeing with McLaren, what I have read about him, not by him, hasn't been impressive. But I think that it's good to read authors with different ideas, so long as we're using our nifty "scriptural filters."
Reading your 'disclaimer' made me sad. It seems like many Christians, including me, are so quick to "warn" people of "evils." But at the same time, I've had so many times in my life when I wished someone would have warned me of the theology I was wrapped up in or about an author I was reading without a scriptural filter and taking everything they said for truth. I think it's difficult for everyone to find a balance between 'warning' and also trusting God that you're not believing everything a heretic says, you know?
Christians typically strain at gnats. Thousands of children in the world are going to starve to death today. We as Christians have the wealth and power to prevent that, but we aren't. I can think of few things that are more evil than that.
a couple of responses:
britt, do you tihnk mclaren is a heretic? i may have gave a slightly wrong impression of what i tihnk of him. i don't think he's a heretic- i have read most of his writings and i tihnk he's not alot of the things people accuse him of...i think he's very wrong about some things and then on others, there is hardly another person i tihnk more alike...anyway, britt,i think you should read the book i am reading...i would be interested to hear your thoughts on that...(i know you probably have a list of a million books to read! *grin*)
pianoman, i have read the purpose driven life and i liked it...i respect rick warren for writing a book that reachesd so many people and made them think about their lives, but its not one of my personal favorites. i tend to gravitate toward older writers ...did you enjoy it?
well...book suggestions are my favorite tihngs...these are a few i always suggest b/c in my opinion, they are life changing!
my #1 recommendation is "Knowledge of the Holy" by AW Tozer... its SUPER-deep and it will enlighten you...awaken you to thoughts of immense majesty- a MUST READ (EVERYTHING else by Tozer is amazing as well)
anything c.s.lewis...esp. Mere Christianity and the Great Divorcce...i also love the Chronicles and The Pilgrim's Regress
Your God is Too Safe by Mark Buchanan...really honest
anything Brennan Manning, esp. the Ragamuffin Gospel
if you read those, i think it will greatly enrich your life and open your heart to God in new fresh ways!
Ah, McLaren's on topic! You asked my boo if she thought McLaren is a Heritic...She can answer what she thinks but I'll write what I think.
First off- minor point... He has his picture on the front of his book. This always makes me feel weird because a lot of authors I really do not like have their faces slapped all over everything. (joyce meyer, joel olsteen)
Sometimes I just don't know what to think of McLaren. He has an awesome commitment to community and art, things I think should be cultivated more, however he seems spineless when it comes to taking Biblical stance and conferentation of sin.
I always warn people to read McLaren with discernment however I like a lot of things he has to say. I can't tell you how many times I or my church has been lumped into the 'emergent church' category but our commitments are just much different. Plus- I just prefer older books (aka puritians). This is just too 'hip' for me i guess.
nick,
thanks for commenting... i prefer older books as well most of the time. he's no tozer or lewis to me, but i still think i can learn from reading his stuff.
as for his face on the cover..yeah, its weird..but its also the first one of his books to have that. its funny coming from the music community i live and work in cause i am in the meetings where the record label wants your face on the cover of your cd..sometimes artists (and maybe writers too?) don't have as much choice as one might think...see my sis' new cd cover!
i tihnk all books should be read with discernment...with a heart and spirit that are awake and looking for Jesus...i think all of life must be lived like that! i trust that the Spirit of God is able to make me aware of lies (intentional and well-meaning) and that His Person will point me to truth.
have you read mclaren's stuff yourself? i find that a lot of people who don't like him are basing that on reviews from someone else and not personal experience. that makes me sad. i would imagine you have read some of it though from your comment...
i guess i don't find that mclaren is soft on sin...rather i think he isn't willing to judge what isn't his to judge...he is more likely to say 'i don't know'..in fact he has often been called a universalist merely because he won't say whom he thinks is going to hell and who isn't...he states clearly, he thinks its God's choice and not the right question for Christians to be asking... i think that hardly makes him a universalist...in fact, i think it merely means he understands his role and God's... i tihnk people don't like him beacuse he won't say he tihnks he is 'right'...Paul said of himself 'i have a clear conscience and if i am wrong, God will make that evident to me'...you know? i respect that mclaren doesn't think he has the corner market on truth...
i love that he stresses community and art too...
Beth looks good on her records...like she is secretly giving the thumbs up. That's what I see when I look at the cover. :-)
But, I have read McLaren's stuff. There are tons of articles online http://www.anewkindofchristian.com however I haven't read the book you are talking about.
When it comes to the 'emergent church' or anyone associated with them I always get a little nervous. Maybe it's because my church community, Sojourn, gets associated with them all the time. Because we have a huge emphasis on community, the arts, and bold love. But we are hardcore about doctrine and taking stands on issues most won't stand on. It's one of those churches that can do truth and grace well...I don't know many that can. From what I know of Mark Driscol and their staff they are similar to our community?
If nothing else, I want to read more to see what McLaren has to say. I'm willing to learn from him.
Hey, girl! I don't think Brian McLaren's a heretic-- as I said before I haven't read anything BY him, just ABOUT him. Sorry if the way I worded things made it sound like that!
The point of my comment was to focus on this part of your post about McLaren:
"its not the kind of stuff you recommend on a broad basis or something i would stamp with a broad approval...i wouldn't paint myself with that brush or add everything the man says to my personal creed...okay? so please don't write back to "warn" me of his "evils", making the wrong assumptions about where i land in the wide reactions to this man...just thought i would throw that out in anticipation...i don't write this blog with the intention of starting debates..."
I think it made me sad that you wrote that because it was like you were expecting people to read and respond in an ungodly, abrasive way. Which of course often happens...this reminds me of Nick's blog about having thick skin, that hopefully believers can one day write about controversial people and topics and "agree to disagree" on our blogs without hurting one another, and with having pure motives.
I was making a general statement that if I was following the teachings of any heretic (not McLaren) I hope a friend would lovingly tell me where in scripture the heretic errored (Jesus was never a man, the resurrection never happened, etc.)so I wouldn't be pulled away from the truths of the scripture.
britt,
thanks for clarifying, girlie..i really wasn't sure if you thought mclaren was a heretic or not...its so interesting how we can all look at one topic and see so many sides and angles of it, you know? i think that's the profit in sharing what we think...i am probably a little defensive about arguments on the blog... its frustrating to write a whole 'journal' on something and then have people comment on one little thing you didn't say just like they thought you should have- i have gotten emails, trust me. so the disclaimer was to try and avoid that.you know? anyway, i was serious about wanting to hear your thoughts on this particular book if you ever get to read it...i think you are particularly discerning and would be curious to see how it strikes you...
nick- a thumbs up? beth always looks to me like she is about to crack up laughing- at herself. what a gem of a creature- i will have to look again *grin*
oh, kate, do you like the sufjan stevens album? we have 'michigan' and i was wondering if 'illinois' was very good? that cd currently resides in nick's car and has yet to make it to mine, but when i listen to it, i love it! it's very relaxing, lyrically genius, and i heard he can play like 50 instruments! he's also playing in nashvegas on sept. 30, i heard. anyway, i love how his album 'michigan' reminds me of family vacation when i look at the cover. ha!
britt,
i haven't heard michigan...we just have illinois...its really good! it reminds me of a musical...yeah he's crazy talented... i might hav to see if we can make it to that show!
kate
*yeah...i read the liner notes and there was a paragraph detailing all the instruments he played on he record...then it listed some kid on a harmonica and the choir people..i was like, seriously??!?!
