Night

Last night I finished reading the most horrifying and moving book that perhaps I have ever read. I picked this book up at Costco less than a week ago because I had heard its title a few times and because it had the Oprah stamp of approval. I had no idea what this book was about when I opened to the first page.

Normally a book this small takes me a day to read....I got a good pot of tea going and I sit for a few hours until its done. This book was painful to read. I would find myself stopping in the middle of a pages...paragraphs...sentences unable to make myself read another word.

Elie Wiesel recounts his days as a Jewish child in the Holocaust. Every responsible adult should read this book. Too many people claim the attempted extermination of the Jewish people did not happen....you must read this man's account.

As I was reading I couldn't help but be struck by the reality that God's chosen Israelite nation has alaways been under attack...and its not just in the History with Hitler....

Hope this book makes you think...

I was fortunate this summer to be able to visit in Germany a former concentration camp, Dachau. As I toured the site of such hatred, my spirit just ached within and the tears fell so very freely. You read the people's stories, what the conditions were like, who was put there, and you just know deep within that the Jewish people to be so hated have to be so special. Being there, I believed so much in the truth of Israel being God's chosen people. I'll have to check this book out as well.

I don't think I could have sat through that book as well. I remember just watching Shindler's List and sobbing through it.

Intense stories and history...it's just sad that all of it happened at all.

The very fact that Israel survived such a determined attempt to wipe them off the face of the map, lets everyone know for certain that God keeps all of His promises (i.e., Jeremiah 30:11).

BTW, Christopher, yes, Israel did bring these things upon herself, but God did not choose them because they were desireable (He constantly called them rebellious, stiff-necked, and stubborn) but because He would show the world how gracious and how loving a God He really is. To not only put up with but even more honor nation of rebels, constantly and continually calling them to repentance, offering complete pardon and forgiveness of sins--even to the point of paying for those sins against Him with His own Son--now, that is a loving God!!

Kate, I've heard about this book and have wanted to read it for the past few months. I have it now, and I'm starting it either tomorrow or Monday. I don't think anyone can prepare themself to read something like this- let alone, experience it.
