quirkiness....its what makes people fun, right? one of my quirks (of of the many) is that i always think people look like animals. for as long as i can remember i have been quizzing my family...seeing if they could pick out the resemblances...
'okay..what animal did she look like?' (me)
'umm...i don't know. i don't think she looks like an animal.' (sister beth, answers)
'seriously? you don't think so-and-so looks anything like a hyeena?'
(beth looks back and me incrediously and laughs.) 'no' (she laughs some more) 'no, not at all. but i do think you are crazy'
i made the mistake of playing this game last year with my then new-fiance. (who by the way, looks like simba...the animated little lion from the lion king)
'do you ever think people look like animals?'
he smiled...waited a moment..and then said, 'i kinda think you look like a frog.'
i was appalled. 'a frog? you think i look like a frog?'
at this point he was laughing himself sick. 'well you have big eyes.'
'i look like a frog. great.'
[as a side note, men don't ever tell a new fiance she looks like anything that is slimy and green]
he tried to make it better..'no like a cute cartoon frog...its just your big eyes...they are beautiful...but its what you notice first on your face..' he kept trying for awhile to make it better. i will spare you the details. its quite the joke now- once you are married and you have seen each other in the morning and pee with the door open- well something as little as looking like a frog isn't such an offense thing. in fact, we have two frogs in our fish tank in honor of me. *grin*
i made a pot of coffee this morning and took shawn a cup downstairs. he was posting a new journal. 'oh you have a new journal up?' 'maybe,' he said with an ornery smile. he continued, 'wanna know the title?'
i nodded, 'sure'.
he smiled even wider, 'its called 'frogs & hermit crabs'.
so there you have it. i fell asleep and late into the night my sweet hubby was writing a journal about our evening (which happened to be kind of rotten) and relating it to the differences in men and women. hence, the title 'frogs & hermit crabs.' [which you should read at http://blog.myspace.com/shawnmcdonald ]
guess who's the frog and who's the hermit crab?... *grin*
i am not sure that frogs are very social...at least the ones in our tank don't seem to socialize much with one another. but hermit crabs certainly are not...at least he got that part right. (if you are reading this, i love you, babe)
lest you be led astray at all...marriage is hard. take the hardest thing you know and multiply it by a million and marriage is still harder than that. its also exponentially sweeter than anything you have known. men and women are so different- yes. and people are so different ... we enter into marriage with different families and life experiences and expectations and needs and honestly, sometimes it can get kind of 'harry'.
it was a harry evening. shawn says in his blog that sometimes he thinks i am crazy for loving him. i am crazy. and i do love him. but i am not crazy FOR loving him. i would have to be insane to not love that man. so don't let his words make you think anything else. sure, he can be an 'ars' every now and then, but can't we all? marriage just has a way of making sure you have to deal with the ungodly things that have built up in your life...because now someone else sees it all.
my cousin, who is a very smart man, says that marriage is something like two porcupines in a snow storm. you cuddle up for warmth and then you prick each and other you have to move away until you get too cold again so you cuddle up again and get pricked again...and so on... very true. i don't know if i can imagine frogs and hermit crabs in a snow storm...but if i could, i would imagine that the frog would be trying to climb right inside the shell- as close as possible to the crab to get warm...and i can imagine it would be making that hermit crab insane. and such is life, my friends..
more (with substance) later... sometimes you just need a silly blog though..hope it made you smile

Man, I was getting so bored here at school! Only 1 hour left! Then, after repeatedly clicking on all my friends blogs 32 times, I gave up. Then, I pondered upon to your blog again!
Oh wow, what a portrait of marriage.
Speaking of Shane B., he thinks his mom looks like a mix between a mouse and an ostrich becuase of her big eyes. :)
Kate, I read Shawns blog about a hour ago. I was anxiously awaiting yours! I love this! You guys are the best. I so identified with both of your blogs.
Thanks to both of you for being so open and honest.
Blessings!
Kathy
Someone once told me I looked like the dodo birds on Ice Age. They almost fell over laughing.
